Tips for Visiting Schools

Visiting schools is always recommended to parents choosing a school. It will help you make your decision about which schools to request. As you tour schools, look for evidence that children are excited and engaged in their learning. The following tips can help you make the most of your visit:

  • Schedule tours when staff members are available to answer questions.
  • Make sure the school can provide for the special abilities, needs and interests of your child.
  • Ask to see the Family Involvement Plan to learn how you can partner in your child’s learning.
  • Ask how the school maintains a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Ask about the school’s grading system and for a copy of the report card the school uses.
  • Research School Information Reports for achievement trends, survey data, and overall demographic information for individual schools.
