MAGNET FOCUS: Montessori (kindergarten through fifth grade): Based on the theories and practices developed by Maria Montessori, Seward implements an individualized, self-directed approach using specifically designed Montessori materials, supporting students progressing at their own rate. Seward helps students draw upon their varied gifts and talents in order to become self-motivated and independent.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Montessori methods and philosophy are implemented in kindergarten through fifth grade; our middle school, sixth through eighth grades, is traditional in design
  • Respectful atmosphere of learning
  • Sixth-grade students participate in a canoe trip, environmental camp and a day of skiing
  • Seventh- and eighth-grade students participate in History Day and a day of skiing
  • Extensive after-school academic and activity-based programs, which enrich and extend learning
  • Studetns learn in multi-age classrooms (first through third grades, fourth through fifth grades, seventh through eighth grades)
  • Curriculum moves from concrete to abstract in all subject areas
  • Responsive Classroom methods and Second Step have proven effective in teaching students respect, listening skills,self-expression and bullying prevention
  • CONNECT - Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra program
  • AVID for students in sixth through eighth grades
