Early Admission Procedures

While MPS does not recommend early admission, some parents may feel their child should start kindergarten earlier than the recommended age. If your child turns five years old between September 2 and October 31, your child is eligible for consideration for early admission to kindergarten, based on the following procedures:

  • Parents/guardians must submit an early admission request form to Student Placement Services by April 1, 2017.
  • Families who are seeking early admission to kindergarten are strongly encouraged to submit a request for High Five by the February 4 deadline.
  • Requests will be reviewed after all other lottery assignments have been made and will be assigned based on space availability.
  • Children must complete an early childhood screening before requests for early admission will be considered by the district. Contact Early Childhood Screening at 612.668.3715 to schedule a screening.
  • School staff will conduct an early admission to kindergarten classroom observation to determine if the child is ready for school. School staff may ask the child’s preschool or childcare center to complete an Early Admission to Kindergarten Recommendation form.
  • If the child appears to be ready for school, he or she will be referred to the MPS Early Childhood Education team to be given the Beginning Kindergarten Assessment. If the child successfully completes this assessment, he or she will be placed at the school that was requested or at a school with available space.
